Milwaukee's best cafe, 2016

For the 10th straight year, October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee, presented by the restaurants of Potawatomi Hotel & Casino. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, dining guides, delectable features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food, as well as voting for your "Best of Dining 2016."

Comet Cafe

Readers again picked perennial category winner Comet Cafe as their favorite Milwaukee cafe, which comes as no surprise as this East Side stalwart continues to offer quality food in a fun setting.

Comet Cafe is a cozy diner and bar that serves up made-from-scratch comfort food like meatloaf, "cheesy-gooey sandwiches" and breakfast until 3 p.m. every day. The menu items are made with seasonal, mostly local products, with a nice mix of meaty and veggie dishes.

Best of all? Every Sunday night is Bacon Night – as in free baskets of bacon. Just take a minute to let the splendor of those words sink in.

Runners up:
2. Cafe at The Pfister
3. The National
4. Cafe at the Plaza
5. Simple Cafe

Lori Fredrich's pick: The National Cafe
Years ago, I would never have predicted that The National Cafe would be one of my favorite spots to grab a bite to eat. But, it's happily become a spot I look to when I'm craving a simple, casual breakfast or lunch. The staff is friendly and I can take my pick from any number of delicious options, including a big bowl of ramen on a cold, blustery day.

This year we also asked a variety of prominent Milwaukeeans to weigh in on their pick for specific categories. For this category, we consulted Fox 6 Milwaukee newsman Ted Perry.

Perry's pick: Comet Cafe
For the "only meal you'll need all day" I head to Comet Cafe. Great place to gorge yourself and have an adult beverage before noon. I have more satisfaction finishing their Bloody Mary then I did when I completed the Chicago Marathon. Simple Cafe is the kind of place I wish were next door. Clean, bright ... and well, simple in appearance, but the food deserves a better description than that. It's creative and tasty. Super friendly staff every time I go in. Cafe at the Plaza is a must on anyone's diner lists. Even after renovation, it hasn't lost that "so this is what the world used to feel like" vibe. The food is classic yet outstanding and you just wish one of the long time residents would sit down and tell you stories. I'm not saying the place has ghosts but if it does, I'd wish they'd join me for an omelet and start talking.
