It wasn’t easy for Custard City to embrace the new guy in town, but today there's a lot more room for frozen yogurt in the Milwaukee treat world.

"Froyo" has fallen in and out of fashion. It was popular nearly everywhere in the '80s and '90s, but then the people turned on the froyo only to later re-embrace it like a long-lost lover. 

In the last 10 years, since people's eating trends have shifted away from high-protein, higher-fat diets again, frozen yogurt has come back, stronger than ever. It seems a new shop pops up almost every month.

The frozen yogurt experience is as much about the toppings as it is the icy part. Candy, fresh fruit, cereal, nuts, bakery crumbles and marshmallows and are available for sprinkling, but because frozen yogurt shops charge by the ounce, the toppings elevate the price – and the caloric intake. 

Even though custard will always be Milwaukee’s frozen treat sweetheart, froyo is seemingly here to stay and available in most neighborhoods.
