The sign at Junior's Custard, located at 6005 W. Appleton Ave., turned dark the weekend of the New Year's holiday. And, much to the chagrin of area residents, the popular custard stand has remained dark for nearly a week.

Today, moving vans were spotted loading up equipment from the stand. And a call to the restaurant received little more than incessant ringing. Even the stand's web site, gotcustard.com has been vacated. Although the owners were unavailable for comment at the time this article was written, evidence points to the fact that the custard stand is no longer.

The Appleton Avenue location has been the site of a custard stand since 1950, when Elsa Kopp opened one of the first Kopp's Custard venues. Kopp's remained for decades, closing in the early 1990s. Since that time, it transitioned first to Robert's Custard in 1991 and then to Junior's in 2011.
