MHSA student Shampriel Morrise was one of 700 young artists nationwide to receive the YoungArts Merit Award.

MHSA student named one of the best, brightest young artists in the nation

Shampriel Morrise, an 11th grade student at Milwaukee High School of the Arts (MHSA) was named one of the "best and brightest young artists in the nation" by the National YoungArts Foundation.

Morrise, a voice major at MHSA, was one of 700 young artists selected from more than 10,000 applicants across the nation to receive the YoungArts Merit Award.

Along with the title of one of the best young artists in the nation, the award comes with a chance to travel to Miami, Los Angeles or New York in February to take master classes taught by renowned artists and the opportunity to become a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts, which comes with a trip to the White House.

Morrise's winning submission was in the category of "Popular Voice," making this the fourth straight year an MHSA student has been honored by the National YoungArts Foundation for vocal performance.

She joins a group of past winners totaling more than 17,000 and including famous names like Vanessa Williams and "Scandal" star Kerry Washington.
