The Party Room hosts celebrations galore

Becky and Scott Berger opened frozen yogurt shop Yo Mama! in Wauwatosa during the summer of 2011. Within the next two years, they opened two more stores – one in Brookfield and one in Shorewood.

Over time, the Bergers realized that the yogurt shops were a popular locale for birthday parties, even though the space was limited. They started to think about how they could provide a larger, more useful party space for their customers.

"When the space next door to our Wauwatosa store became available, we knew that it would be perfect for our big ideas," says Becky. "Also, as a mother, I knew there were lots of other moms like me that do not like the hassle and mess of holding parties in my own home."

In June 2014, the Bergers – along with Peg Zanella – opened The Party Room, 7505 Harwood Ave., in the space that was formerly B Green.

The majority of parties held in The Party Room are kids' birthday parties, but they also have hosted many bridal and baby showers as well as a couple graduation parties. It has also been used as a meeting space.

Birthday party packages range in price, depending on the date and size of party. To find out more information or to book a party, go here. A two-hour minimal rental is required.

The space features a variety of amenities, including a "Face Maker Taker 3000," which is a custom-built photo booth with a green screen so that people can select from a variety of backgrounds for photos.

There is also an on-site "test kitchen" and with birthday packages kids can create and decorate their own chocolate-dipped treat. All parties include Yo Mama! frozen yogurt.

Food is available through numerous neighboring restaurants including Pizzeria Piccola, La Reve and Cafe Hollander.

The party packages also include custom invitations and thank you notes, paper goods, use of sound system and disco ball, large screen TV with a gaming system and a personal attendant to supervise, set up and clean up the event.

Becky grew up on Milwaukee's North Side, graduated from Pius XI High School and then earned a degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from UW-Milwaukee.

"My professional life before Yo Mama! was 'mother of babies,'" she says.

The Bergers have four daughters. The oldest lives in New York City, the second is a freshman at Purdue University and the two youngest, who are twins, are in sixth grade. The family lives in Brookfield.

The expansion business has been a challenge for the Bergers, but a rewarding one.

"I definitely have acquired quite a few gray hairs over the last few years, but turning 40 might have played a part as well," says Becky.

"Joking aside, it has been very rewarding. My children have learned a ton by being involved and seeing how much work it takes to run a business. Also, there's nothing better than seeing the smiles on all the little faces when they walk through our doors."
