With the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks tomorrow, the Milwaukee Fire Department and several local leaders announced their plans this morning to pay tribute to the lives tragically lost 13 years ago.

In order to recognize and pay tribute to the 343 firefighters who gave their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, the Milwaukee Fire Department will host commemorations tomorrow morning at five separate fire stations:

  • Battalion 1 - Engine 2, 755 N. James Lovell St.
  • Battalion 2 - Engine 24, 4927 W. Fiebrantz Ave.
  • Battalion 3 - Engine 33, 4515 W. Burnham Ave.
  • Battalion 4 - Engine 7, 3174 S. Chase Ave.
  • Battalion 5 - Engine 16, 10320 W. Fond Du Lac Ave.

The commemorations will begin tomorrow morning at 9:05 a.m., with an individual Honor Guard member at each location calling attention and presenting arms for the salute in remembrance of the first tower's collapse. At this time, a department member will lower the American flag to half-staff. At 9:06 a.m., the Chief Officer at each location, along with four chosen others, will begin reading the names of the 343 firefighters. The ceremonies will conclude at 9:28 a.m. with the Honor Guard member calling attention and presenting arms.

Off-duty personnel are encouraged to participate.

Meanwhile, several local leaders – including Mayor Tom Barrett, Gov. Scott Walker, County Executive Chris Abele and British Ambassador Sir Peter Westmacott – will honor the victims of Sept. 11 with a special ceremony at the Milwaukee War Memorial Center. The tribute will include placing wreaths in the Veterans Plaza reflecting pool, speakers remembering those lost that fateful day and a performance of "God Bless America" from the Milwaukee High School of the Arts Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Attendees are also invited to ring the bell of the USS Milwaukee to pay tribute to the victims.

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. and run until 8:15 a.m.
