{image1} When it came time for Milwaukee band Albatross -- a foursome composed of Nicole Szydlowski on vocals and guitar, Dale Tuchalski on bass, Bob Lukomski on guitar and Andy Crownover on drums -- to release its debut album, band members decided to call it "Greatest Hits."

"We wanted to start off strong," says Lukomski.

Powered by female vocals, Albatross is making a name for itself. Since forming a little over two years ago and experiencing musical chairs with bandmates the group has now found its groove.

"We play originals as well as cover songs," Lukomski adds. "It's good old-fashioned, down-and-dirty rock 'n' roll."

The benefit of playing both originals and covers, according to Lukomski, is that the Milwaukee market is geared towards cover bands, so why not give the people what they want while adding in original songs, too?

Covers on the band's set list include Grand Funk Railroad's "We're An American Band," The Cars' "You're All I've Got Tonight," Collective Soul's "Shine" and "You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morisette.

And they love live performances.

"I love the energy and adrenaline," says Lukomski. "You can't beat it."

"Greatest Hits" contains five songs, each offering a bounty of instrumental talent, from the guitar solos in opening track "Every Day" to the slide guitar on "(I Can't) Breathe." The third track, "Gimme A Sign," has a great opening hook reminiscent of the Black Crowes with a hint of Heart.

Where the musical strength of the album grows, the vocals seem to sink. Szydlowski, although giving it her best, often doesn't make the grade. Albatross' potential is there, but overnight success isn't in the cards.

Albatross will play Calhoun Station, 1849 S. Calhoun Rd., in New Berlin on Saturday, Oct. 15.
