What do you do with your corks when you're done with that bottle of wine? I put mine in the compost, but I have often wondered if any restaurants ever think about what to do with their corks?
I'll wonder no more, at least in the case of Devon Seafood Grill, which has a restaurant in Bayshore Town Square.
While 99 percent of corks are popped into landfills -- yes, that's nearly 13 BILLION corks annually -- Devon will recycle its corks.
The restaurant announced today that it is the first Milwaukee restaurant to partner with ReCORK, an American wine cork recycling program. In addition to recycling the corks pulled from bottles sold in the restaurant, Devon will accept your corks, too.
Bring the corks from the wine bottles you enjoy at home and Devon will send them to ReCORK which, in collaboration with SOLE, will turn them into footwear products. The goal is to save and preserve more than six million acres of cork forests in the Mediterranean Ocean basin.
If you want to celebrate this great program, there will be no better time than on Wednesday, June 30, when Devon hosts "Kickin' it Cape Town style: Devon's World Cup WineTasting."
For $29 per person, from 6 to 8 p.m., you'll get to sample six South African wines and appetizers, including chipotle grilled shrimp with mango chutney, grilled rare yellowtail, toasted coconut in endive cups and ostrich tenderloin kabobs, among others.
In addition, a rep from Cape Classics winery in South Africa will be on hand to discuss the wines being tasted.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he lived until he was 17, Bobby received his BA-Mass Communications from UWM in 1989 and has lived in Walker's Point, Bay View, Enderis Park, South Milwaukee and on the East Side.
He has published three non-fiction books in Italy – including one about an event in Milwaukee history, which was published in the U.S. in autumn 2010. Four more books, all about Milwaukee, have been published by The History Press.
With his most recent band, The Yell Leaders, Bobby released four LPs and had a songs featured in episodes of TV's "Party of Five" and "Dawson's Creek," and films in Japan, South America and the U.S. The Yell Leaders were named the best unsigned band in their region by VH-1 as part of its Rock Across America 1998 Tour. Most recently, the band contributed tracks to a UK vinyl/CD tribute to the Redskins and collaborated on a track with Italian novelist Enrico Remmert.
He's produced three installments of the "OMCD" series of local music compilations for OnMilwaukee.com and in 2007 produced a CD of Italian music and poetry.
In 2005, he was awarded the City of Asti's (Italy) Journalism Prize for his work focusing on that area. He has also won awards from the Milwaukee Press Club.
He has be heard on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee talking about his "Urban Spelunking" series of stories, in that station's most popular podcast.
