Welcome to GIF City

There's some buzz surrounding the Milwaukee Bucks this year, namely because of some exciting, athletic talent like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Brandon Knight (and now-injured rookie Jabari Parker).

Whenever the "kids" do something in a game – and they usually do something highlight-worthy – Bucks fans take to Twitter with Vines and GIFs of their exploits.

UPDATE: Just a day after posting this, Giannis went ahead and did this against Portland.

And, when these things happen, there tend to be hashtags spread across each player or highlight, and it got me thinking – are these guys due for a nickname?

I think so.

So, in the vein of Rip City (Portland) and Lob City (Los Angeles Clippers), as well as with a nod to the social media savviness of the team, its players, and its fan base, how about GIF City? (Or, #GIFCity, for those so inclined.)

OK. It's lame. But it lets me do this ...

And this ...

And add this one, too ...

Oh! Don't forget this dandy ...

Or this one ...

And, of course, my all-time favorite.

"Greek Freak" headlines NBA Dunk Contest

Giannis Antetokounmpo is an expressive young man, quick with a smile, and quicker still to get above the rim and throw down vicious dunks.

He's creative in the way he attacks the rim, and he makes it a point to finish loudly – like this:

So it's no surprise that a Yahoo! Sports report notes that the second-year Milwaukee Bucks forward will participate in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest during its All-Star festivities in New York, Feb. 13-15.

Antetokounmpo was likely headed to New York anyway to play in the Rising Stars game, which pits the game's top first and second-year players against one another.

The 20-year-old forward is averaging 11.7 points and 6.1 rebounds while shooting 49.7 percent from the floor through the first half of this season.

Swing away the cold at FORE!

The wind shooting up Water Street cut through my scarf, my gloves, and my knit hat. I reflexively tightening the grip on the steel in my left hand, and brought my right up to my face to keep the scarf from allowing any more of that biting cold to hit my skin.

I got a few odd looks on the short walk from the office, down a few blocks to 530 N. Water St.

After all, it’s not every minus 9-degree day that you see someone in Downtown Milwaukee hurriedly carrying golf clubs through traffic.

"It’s always 72 degrees in here all the time," laughed Tim Grogan, the PGA professional who owns and operates FORE! Milwaukee, an indoor-golf range and bar.

We wrote about Tim and FORE! about this time two years ago when he launched his idea of having a walking-friendly, Downtown golf facility.

"That was the big reason for doing this kind of business Downtown – it was the convenience," Grogan said. "With the road construction in the Milwaukee area, it takes too long to go golf. And that’s golf’s problem. It takes too long. By the time you leave the house, it’s a six-hour ordeal."

Initially, he was in the Third Ward, but that building was sold.

This is his first winter at the current location on Water Street, and let me tell you, it was a nice mental reprieve to think about golf on one of the coldest days of the last few months and Grogan says he’s seen an uptick in corporate and special events, as well as boom in leagues.

"We’re still drawing people in from the Third Ward, we’re close enough there, to get our customers from there, and we’re getting new customers from Wisconsin and Water St., the busiest intersection in Milwaukee," Grogan said. "Business guys are starting to see it."

The most important aspect of FORE! are the four high-tech simulators, where you can literally play entire round of golf – every shot from first tee to 18th green – and have the ball respond as it would outdoors.

I’m a fan of golf technology and my incredulit…
