Hey, hands get cold. We who have been in Wisconsin have seen it all when the weather is concerned. Cold, wet and rain in the summer and fluke heat waves in the winter all come and go here.

But most of us are prepared for what the bitter weather we can see this winter. Others who may be struggling could use a little help.

Milwaukee Public Television will collect hats, scarves and gloves from Oct. 7 to 25 as part of the station’s sixth annual "Mittens & More" community service event.

The project is seeking donations of new mittens and other items from individuals knitting groups, schools and service organizations to help families in need. The greatest need is for children’s sizes.

Last year, the effort gathered 4,150 items that were distributed to 36 selected agencies and schools in the area. Teachers and service providers were able to give mittens and other warm-weather items to children and families that didn’t have them.

Drop-off sites will be available beginning Oct. 7. For more information, go to mptv.org or call (414) 297-7514 or (414) 297-7520.
