One of those many "live-a-better-life"-type columns I stumbled upon recently offered this advice: Make at least one new friend a year. What great counsel as we enter 2008.
Start the new year with a new friend who doesn't care if you don't lose the 10 pounds, cut back on the caffeine or find Mr. Right. Plus, this new pal will fulfill the best resolution: making at least one new friend - in the form of a homeless animal who needs your home and your heart.
Tricky is a stunning, 7-year-old Shetland Sheepdog/American Eskimo mix with a thick, luxurious coat that will require brushing to keep it healthy and shiny. Tricky has a beautiful smile and a personality to match. He eagerly crawls onto your lap for affection and love. He is polite around other animals but not a very physical playmate.
With other dogs, Tricky prefers to just say hello rather than wrestle in the snow.
Tricky isn't a super active dog, but his health will benefit from a daily walk and a round of fetch. Most of the time, though, he'll likely follow you around the house, becoming an instant friend. Need someone to hang out with while you read, watch TV or make dinner? Tricky may be your perfect companion.

If you're into pretty-boy pop masquerading as indie rock, you may have found yourself at the Saint Motel show Sunday night at Summerfest. Frontman A/J Jackson and company brought their pop-indie sensibilities to a dancing, teenaged and 20-something crowd at the U.S. Cellular stage.

Journey opened its hour-and-a-half set at the BMO Harris Pavilion with "Be Good to Yourself" and served a steady stream of its classics: "Separate Ways," "Any Way You Want It" and "Only the Young." No one can ever truly replace "The Voice" Steve Perry, but sound-alike Arnel Pineda comes damn close -- and, at age 46, he brings his own youthful vibrancy to the band's current line-up.

When you hear that a band is coming to town to perform all its songs from one, specific album, you might think, "Meh. Boring. I'll save the $35 and listen to the CD I've listened to a couple thousand times." But when that band is the Pixies, the album is "Doolittle" and the set list exactly mirrors the album, you might think, "That show would be amazing." And you'd be right. The Pixies played a packed show at the Eagles Ballroom Saturday night that, with two encores, gave serious fans their fill.

Miller Park has likely never seen as much flannel as it did Saturday night, when it played host to Farm Aid 25. I had the pleasure of witnessing the iconic event from the perch provided by a suite.
