Ernest Hupeden: Beyond the Forest

Jan. 2, 2013 - March 24, 2013

Ernest Hüpeden was a German-born visionary artist who immigrated to the United States as a young man. After finding his way to southwestern Wisconsin, he made a living as an itinerant artist by exchanging paintings -- on canvas, glass, walls and even furniture -- for food and lodging. Hüpeden’s documenting of rural American life, in this and other paintings created during his wanderings, reflects the nostalgia, patriotism, aspirations and values of his patrons as well as the larger values of a state and nation on the rise. This is the first major exhibition of the artist’s paintings and includes a number of recently restored works.

Venue Description:
One of the area's finest art museums and, sadly, a fairly well-kept secret. The museum features cutting-edge exhibitions in an airy, post-modern building and a century-old mansion in downtown Sheboygan. An ambitious performance schedule keeps things lively. ARTCafe serves beverages and exceptional sandwiches.
