New Field Museum show traces colorful history of tattooing

The Field Museum's "Tattoo" exhibition, which runs through April, is by no means the first exhibition on the art of ink on skin, but considering the size and reach of this Chicago institution, it's surely one of the biggest.


Haggerty launches four new shows

There's an art explosion on the Marquette campus where the Haggerty Museum of Art recently opened four exhibitions that all run through May 19. On a recent visit, I most enjoyed Milwaukee photographer Kevin Miyazaki's "Perimeter," which is in a small gallery just inside the entrance.


Postcards open a window on our own state

At first glance, it might seem odd that The John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan might put out a call asking people from around the country to submit Wisconsin postcards for its current show, "Wisconsin Confidential: An Exhibition without Borders," which runs through Feb. 3. But, think about it - Badger State postcards would more likely be sent from the state than to it.


"Real Pirates" explains the intersection of slavery and piracy

The National Geographic exhibition is called "Real Pirates," but the sprawling new show at Milwaukee Public Museum is more complex than the name suggests. The focus is the story of the Whydah, but the three-masted, 300-ton galley was built in Britain in 1715 to carry slaves from West Africa to the Caribbean. Suddenly, this is more than a Depp-style fantasy tale of swashbuckling buccaneers.
