It took 50 years for Milwaukee's citizenry to gather enough interest to attempt to tackle the project once more, but the design, which currently flies on our flag today also helped illustrate the definition of "Design by Committee."

Basketball is a game that involves quick moves, clever tactics, and constant energy, but there is nothing dynamic about this logo. The whole thing is mirrored from right to left. There is nothing interesting about that. I want this deer to be doing something. Not running or fighting or playing basketball, but something as simple as turning its head would tell me it's a three-dimensional living, breathing, exciting team.

Shortly after we got news that the upcoming Damien Jurado record featured one of Milwaukee's beloved landmark domes, we learned that the man behind that sleeve design - and dozens of others released by Secretly Canadian and its related labels Jagjaguwar and Dead Oceans - lives in Milwaukee. Naturally, our curiosity was piqued and so we decided to meet this rock and roll designer and to introduce him to you, too.

Located in Two Rivers, the Hamilton Wood Type Museum houses 1.5 million pieces of wood type and more than 1,000 styles and sizes of patterns, making it one of the largest wood type collections in the world. However, the museum is being forced to move and is currently weighing options.
