After a month and a half of buzz, conflicting awards results and Hollywood gamesmanship, yes, the Oscars are finally happening this Sunday night. So as a little refresher for your Oscar parties and betting pools, here's a quick guide to the big nominees, listing off why or why not each movie has a chance.

Bright and early this morning, the president of the Academy Cheryl Boone-Isaacs and Chris Hemsworth announced the nominees for the 86th Oscars. "American Hustle" and "Gravity" led the way with 10 nominations each, including Best Picture. Here are the rest of the nominees for us to debate and discuss endlessly for the next month and a half (is it really going to be that long? Oh dear).

2013 was a haven of terrific films, stories and moments from names both familiar (Cuaron, Scorsese, Allen) and fairly new (Cretton, McQueen). There were so many that limiting a best of the year list to ten selections seems to sell 2013 short. But that's exactly what I'm here to do. Here are the ten finest in a particularly fine year in movies, as well as the most atrocious five.
