The James Beard Foundation announced the semi-finalist candidates for its prestigious award this morning. Among those chosen are three chefs hailing from Milwaukee, along with a number of Madison candidates.

We could expend a lot of calories detailing all of the achievements of Chicago-based Chef Rick Tramonto, who visits Milwaukee next month for the Lombardi Food and Wine Experience to benefit cancer research and patient care in Southeast Wisconsin. Meritage chef and owner Jan Kelly is still stunned that she is a semifinalist for a James Beard Foundation Award. Kelly is among 20 persons named semifinalists for the prestigious best chef's award in the Midwest region. Dan Van Rite of Hinterland and Justin Aprahamian of Sanford are also on the list, which will be narrowed down to five next Monday.
