The desperately modern "Annie" is cinematic artificial sweetener

Before the movie's going to congratulate itself for nixing its namesake, it ought to replace or reinvent it with something at least a little bit better. And unfortunately, this new "Annie" - encased in layers of fake sugary pop-song gloss and forced modernity - isn't all that much of an improvement.

The first installment of Marc Webb's rebooted Spider-Man series was content to follow almost identically in its predecessor's footsteps, taking in millions of dollars and handing out even more in cases of déjà vu. Now the desperate franchise has managed to blindly retrace the footsteps right into the same exact minefield. The faces may be new this time around, but now even the mistakes all are the same. In fact, they're somehow worse.

It's too bad "White House Down" will always be considered a knock-off of "Olympus Has Fallen" (they both began filming last July), because it's also easily the more entertaining of the two.

Well, it took director Quentin Tarantino 20 years, but he finally got his Western ... kinda. Although it's fair to say he's been preparing his entire career with his raucously bloody shoot-'em-ups, Tarantino's time warming up has been well spent if "Django Unchained" is the final result
