Once again, Wisconsin Vision, Milwaukee Teachers' Education Association, Milwaukee Public Schools, and Prevent Blindness Wisconsin have teamed up to bring free eye exams and glasses to students at two schools via the Clear Days Ahead program.

Rows of students proudly stood in front of tri-fold posters as teachers, parents and community members packed the Peck Welcome Center at the Milwaukee County Zoo during the Milwaukee Public Schools' (MPS) science fair. This was the first year, according to a report from Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service, that MPS specifically highlighted STEM at the science fair.

On Sept. 1, new principal Nancy Martinez will stand outside Kagel Elementary in Walker's Point to welcome her kids to school. Martinez is one of more than 50 new principals taking over at Milwaukee Public Schools this school year. When MPS superintendent Dr. Gregory Thornton talks of an exciting new era, and a new opportunity for MPS, he's clearly got talented, exuberant folks like Martinez in mind.

Like me, it seems that quite a few other folks are curious about and fascinated by old school buildings. The response to my blogs about the Henry Koch-designed Garfield Avenue School and Kagel Elementary were well-received and got me a number of e-mails and in-person comments. Those led to an afternoon of exploration.

Last week, I wrote about Garfield Avenue School, a lovely Romanesque Revival schoolhouse near 4th and North, that was designed by Henry C. Koch, who also designed City Hall, The Pfister Hotel, Turner Hall and Golda Meir School. The photo you see above, is Kagel Elementary, 1210 W. Mineral St., in Walker's Point.
