Over the weekend, a friend posted a picture on social media that was taken at her birthday dinner with the caption "Birthday drinks with the birthday girls." I was tagged in this photo on Facebook and it has resulted in yet another episode of "everything happens for a reason."

When Milwaukee's Amy O'Neill got a text from her dear friend and former Milwaukeean Deanne Wecker at 1:53 Central Time that said "Amy a bomb went off" she immediately knew something went horribly wrong at the Boston Marathon.

Sometimes television brings us wonder, entertainment and enlightenment. At other times, we witness events of people at their worst. The mass killings that took place last week in Newtown, Conn., were truly tragic.

The news is sadly familiar. This from a report a few days ago: "A gunman opened fire in a central Florida beauty salon Thursday, killing three women and wounding a fourth before killing himself at a nearby home, police said. The shooting appeared to be part of a domestic dispute." Three days later, a nearly identical story played out in Brookfield and we watched. But why do we watch?
