The Brewers claimed right-handed relief pitcher Chris Mabeus off waivers from Oakland today.

Mabeus, 27, was 0-1 with a 4.58 earned run average in 12 outings for Class AAA Sacramento this season. He worked 19 2/3 innings and allowed 16 hits, 10 earned runs, 10 walks and a homer. He struck out 10 batters.

Mabeus, who will be assigned to Class AAA Nashville, was a 13th-round draft pick in 2001 and has spent his entire pro career in the Athletics' minor-league system. He made 210 of his 219 appearances in relief.

In order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Mabeus, the Brewers designated knuckleballer Jared Fernandez for assignment. Fernandez worked two different stints with the Brewers this season and posted a 9.95 ERA in four relief appearances.

The Brewers have 10 days to trade, release or assign Fernandez outright to the minor leagues.
