It was a grim week in Green Bay, and particularly in the Packers locker room, after Aaron Rodgers suffered a fractured collarbone against the Vikings that is potentially season-ending. Players were weary of being asked if the team would struggle without its star quarterback and about backup Brett Hundley’s competence. Ty Montgomery seemed particularly glum, offering curt answers and appearing annoyed with the media.

So it was that, responding to a lighthearted, non-football-related question – amid the Rodgers gloom, as Halloween approaches and with so much these days in disagreement – Montgomery gave Packers fans something to come together on, rally around and celebrate.

Ty Montgomery doesn’t like candy corn.

The 24-year-old running back was asked about his argument on Monday with Mike Daniels, on the weekly Packers talk show The Clubhouse, in which Daniels espoused his affection for the tricolored trick-or-treat staple and offered his teammate a piece. Montgomery refused and rejected Daniels’ pro-candy corn opinion on Twitter.

Then Montgomery doubled down on his stance with reporters.

"It’s just fake candy," Montgomery said matter-of-factly at his locker. "It’s wax with some paint on it. It’s not very good."

Montgomery added, "Personally, I don’t eat a lot of candy." Presumably, Daniels, the jolly 310-pound defensive tackle who proudly proclaims his love of anime, comic books and other uncommon professional athlete interests, eats more, and he certainly seems to be more passionate on the subject.

Montgomery went on to reveal that, as a kid growing up in Dallas, he was not allowed to participate in trick-or-treating, so he hasn’t worn many Halloween costumes in his life. Last year, he dressed as Bamm-Bamm from "The Flintstones," a nod to the nickname he was given on The Clubhouse. I refrained from telling him about my recent candy corn vodka concoction.

Even though Daniels holds the more vehement view – indeed, the fiery veteran is more vehement than most people about probably everything – fans overwhelmingly agreed with Montgomery (and, by extension, comedian Lewis Black).

Anyway, here are just some of the replies to my tweet on Montgomery’s antipathy to candy corn.

But not everyone agreed with Montgomery!

Born in Milwaukee but a product of Shorewood High School (go ‘Hounds!) and Northwestern University (go ‘Cats!), Jimmy never knew the schoolboy bliss of cheering for a winning football, basketball or baseball team. So he ditched being a fan in order to cover sports professionally - occasionally objectively, always passionately. He's lived in Chicago, New York and Dallas, but now resides again in his beloved Brew City and is an ardent attacker of the notorious Milwaukee Inferiority Complex.

After interning at print publications like Birds and Blooms (official motto: "America's #1 backyard birding and gardening magazine!"), Sports Illustrated (unofficial motto: "Subscribe and save up to 90% off the cover price!") and The Dallas Morning News (a newspaper!), Jimmy worked for web outlets like CBSSports.com, where he was a Packers beat reporter, and FOX Sports Wisconsin, where he managed digital content. He's a proponent and frequent user of em dashes, parenthetical asides, descriptive appositives and, really, anything that makes his sentences longer and more needlessly complex.

Jimmy appreciates references to late '90s Brewers and Bucks players and is the curator of the unofficial John Jaha Hall of Fame. He also enjoys running, biking and soccer, but isn't too annoying about them. He writes about sports - both mainstream and unconventional - and non-sports, including history, music, food, art and even golf (just kidding!), and welcomes reader suggestions for off-the-beaten-path story ideas.
