August typically signals the end of summer – and the end of summer blockbuster season. And you definitely get that vibe from the list of new arrivals coming to the Big Red Streaming Monolith next August, a whole pile of Kirkland brand movies and TV shows that you can ALMOST try to get excited about ... but not quite.
But really, it feels like everything coming to Netflix in August comes with an asterisk. The streaming service is getting a bunch of Chucky movies ... but not the actual original "Child's Play." Jack Reacher is coming to the service too ... the hit-or-miss Tom Cruise movies, not the new hit Amazon TV show. Look at that: A whole bunch of AMC shows are arriving on Netflix! Oh ... it's none of the hits like "Walking Dead" or "Mad Men" but instead a bunch of stuff you've probably never heard of.
These backhanded additions extend even to the Netflix originals coming to the service in August. Did you like Zack Snyder's two-part sci-fi epic "Rebel Moon"? No? No one did? Well, too bad, because we're getting two bonus director's cut versions of them now. "Emily in Paris" will get a season in August too ... well, half of a new season, as Netflix will stretch the Parisian romantic romp across two separate releases. And there's a new season of a baking competition show on the menu ... just not the baking competition show you know and love. Nope, instead it's something called "Blue Ribbon Baking Championship" which truly sounds like the discount Kirkland brand version of "Great British Baking Show."
OK, I've been very negative about this month's new Netflix tenants – but it's not all middling news for August. The shockingly solid zombie action epic "World War Z" will reawaken on the streaming service, along with a number of A+ A24 releases, including the coming-of-age winner "The Spectacular Now," the technicolor terror of "Pearl" and the Best Picture nominee "Room." For sports fans struggling through these dog days of the schedule, Netflix is here to help with some new "Untold" docs – and there's even a fresh season of "The Umbrella Academy" too. So maybe I'm just being a grumpus because the summer feels like it's already disappeared before our eyes.

As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.
When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
