In Bars & Clubs

Would you like to see a restaurant and dance club in this Farwell Avenue space?

Future of A-1 Supper Club and Ultra Lounge still uncertain

"Bar Month" at OnMilwaukee.com is back for another round! The whole month of February, we're serving up intoxicatingly fun articles on bars and clubs -- including guides, the latest trends, rapid bar reviews and more. Grab a designated driver and dive in!

After an initial 2-2 split, the Common Council's License Committee voted Monday to send the Class B Tavern Dance application for the A-1 Supper Club and Ultra Lounge to a full council vote without a recommendation. A-1 is a proposed new eatery and dance club on Milwaukee's East Side.

Ald. Nik Kovac, Ald. Tony Zielinski and committee chair Ald. Jim Bohl voted for the motion, while. Ald. Milele Coggs voted against it. Ald. Ashanti Hamilton was excused.

The full council must still vote on whether or not to grant the license. It is rare for the committee to send the application to the council without endorsement. Most liquor license applications are either supported or denied by the committee.

Marc A. Brown -- who owns the Silverstein Group with his mother, Marcia Bacon -- hopes to open the restaurant and dance club in the former WOW Cafe and Wingery, 2116 N. Farwell Ave. If Brown receives the license, he will include a dance floor and live entertainment in his new "upscale but intimate" venue.

The East Side Association executive director Jim Plaisted noted that his membership voted 10-0 against the dance club license portion of the A-List application.

Several neighbors and groups attended the committee meeting and expressed conflicting opinions. About a half-dozen neighbors were concerned about having a "night club" near their homes. However, several spoke in favor, including former Mayor Marvin Pratt, who said he has known the family for generations and that they were "positive people."

"With our pedigree, we did not expect to have this much opposition," says Brown.

Brown is the former owner of the dance club, Onyx, 3120 W. Villard Ave., and a restaurant, Onyx 2, 3500 N. Teutonia Ave.

Ummm... I feel like I'm in "Footloose." Dancing is bad! It leads to drugs and sex! I don't hang out in clubs... well, ever, but I've never really seen any problems with places like Kenadee's, or Cush, or Decibel... they're just bars with a dance floor. Not to mention the fact that there aren't really homes around there. It's surrounded by a bike path, a bike shop and the Kenilworth building. Am I missing something? What is the problem?

Not sure A-1 whatever it is should go in there but I wish something would. It has been sitting empty for too long. There is plenty of parking behind the building, enough for 50 plus cars, so that is not a problem even if some uninformed person thinks there isn't any.
