The near-Water Street bar formerly known as Fat Abbey Biercafe has apparently shed a bit of its winter weight just in time for summer. Co-owner Mike Eitel announced today that Diablos Rojos has decided to drop the word "Fat" from the bar and restaurant's name.

"We wanted to shed some of the stigma that we were a beer snob bar," says Eitel. "The Abbey has many unique beers on the menu, but it's not about being an expert, it's about trying things you may not have ever heard of or rediscovering an old favorite beer that may not be offered regularly at other bars."

The name change coincides with updated summer hours as well as an in-the-works revamped food and drinks menu. The Abbey Biercafe, 134 E. Juneau Ave., is now open for lunch at 11 a.m. Monday through Saturday and noon Sunday.

Abbey Biercafe sounds more beer snobby than Fat Abbey. Weird logic. I do like the place, but it may be in the wrong location. Water street kinda sucks.

The Abbey suffers from Swig Syndrome. Anyytime a bar that doesn't follow the Water Street formula moves in it is destined to fail. Most of the morons on Water Street don't want to spend 7 bucks on a beer. If this was in the Third Ward it would be hugely successful.

Best place on or near Water St. Great beers, nice patio, and plenty of good music too (especially the DJ's).

Not a fan, with or without "Fat" in the name. When I want to sample a variety of beers, I have a hard time finding any place better than Sugar Maple in Bay View.

I had a great time at the Biercafe for the 88.9, 2 year party (even if they failed to advertise a $10 cover, I was happy to pay to contribute to the radio station). Fat Abbey is an OK name, Abbey Biercafe just doesn't seem to roll off the tongue too well IMO. Still a very nice place, can't wait until its nice enough to sit outside.
