"Bar Month" at OnMilwaukee.com is back for another round! The whole month of February, we're serving up intoxicatingly fun bars and club articles -- including guides, unique features, drink recipes and more. Grab a designated driver and dive in!
The votes are in and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best: Bars & Clubs, 2009. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all month long in the Bars and Clubs section of OnMilwaukee.com.
The fact that Bay View won the readers' choice award for best Milwaukee bar district really says something about this up-and-coming neighborhood. Five years ago, you'd find plenty of bars in the South Side neighborhood, but almost everyone who patronized them lived down the street.
Now, some the city's best bars call Bay View their home: Palomino, Sugar Maple, Burnhearts, Cactus Club, Blackbird, Café Centraal, Palm Tavern, Lulu, The Newport, Highbury Pub ... the list goes on and on and on.
It wasn't long ago that North Avenue or Water Street would be a shoe-in for this award, but neither cracked the top three this year.
We, too, love the Bay View bar scene, but as bar districts go, it's a bit spread out and not all that pedestrian friendly, which is why we picked Brady Street as our editor's choice winner.
OnMilwaukee.com editor's choice: Brady Street
Runners-up:
2. Walker's Point
3. Brady Street
4. North Avenue
5. Third Ward
6. Water Street
7. Old World Third Street
8. Wauwatosa Village
9. Miller Park area
10. Packard Avenue
11. Marquette

Take a stroll to the end of Bayview on the border with St. Francis and you will find Roman's Pub. One of the best bars in the country. If you love craft beer this is the place for you. Just don't sass Mike.

If you have a girlfriend who enjoys drinking as much as you do, I highly recommend Burnhearts. Get there early enough to grab a bar seat and you're all set for the night. Cozy atmoshpere, friendly barstaff, good music and great beer! What more do you need?

Cafe Centraal in Bay View rules! I love the Belgian beers and the bartenders.
