When the owners of Good City Brewing said they were planning a June 17 opening, they weren’t giving a ballpark estimate for the start date. True to their word, Andy Jones, Dan Katt and David Dupee will open the doors of their brewery and restaurant to the public on Friday, June 17 at 11:30 a.m.

Today, we stopped by for a first look at the space, 2108 N. Farwell Ave., which was formerly Crank Daddy’s Bicycle Works.

"We’re all really pumped," says Dupee.

Good City Brewing will offer nine beers brewed in house and a full menu created by chef Guy Davies, formerly of Rumpus Room. Menu items include appetizers, burgers, salads and entrees, with stand-out items like veggie laksa – a spicy Malaysian curry dish – along with pork shoulder and "fakin' bacon" gnocchi. There’s also a kids' menu. Many of the dishes are made with locally sourced items, including Clock Shadow Creamery cheese, Milwaukee Pretzel Co. pretzels and Purple Door ice cream.

"We are a brewery first and foremost," says Dupee. "But if we’re going to do food, we’re going to do it well."

The brewery is based on three values: excellence, people and place. These concepts drove all of the owners’ decisions – from having the brewery in sight of customers to not bringing televisions into the space.

During our visit, we sampled four beers: Motto, a pale ale; Clean Cut, a session IPA; Risk, an India Pale Ale and Detail, a Porter. Not usually an IPA fan (I know, I know – blasphemy to some), I still enjoyed the Clean Cut because of its citrus-y/fruity taste. I also found the Porter very good with a balance of chocolate and coffee flavors.

"We're shooting for drinkability," says Jones.

Good City offers to-go, 32-ounce cans of beer and plans to have more can options within the year.

The hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to midnight; Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to midnight and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. The first week or so, a limited menu will be served for dinner only, with snacks earlier in the day.

Good City’s symbol is a key, which is visible inside and outside the brewery. "We want people to live their lives like they were given the key to the city," says Dupee.
