Bar Month" at OnMilwaukee.com is back for another round! The whole month of February, we're serving up intoxicatingly fun bars and club articles -- including guides, bartender profiles, drink recipes and even a little Brew City bar history. Cheers!
Sometimes on a cold day, all you want to do is pull up a bar stool in a place where everybody knows your name. Luckily, for Marquette students and area denizens, cozy pubs and friendly watering holes are nearby. Whether you're looking for lively sports bars, live music or a snug spot for spirits, the MU campus is alive and kicking. Sure O.D.'s and The 'Lanche are gone, but new spots are carrying on the Warriors tradition.
Caffrey's
717 N. 16th St.
(414) 933-9047
After a recent renovation, Caffrey's, or Caff's as it is more commonly known, carries the reputation as the "place to be" for folks and fun. Complete with outdoor patio for warm weather revelry or a snug corner fireplace for cool weather relaxing, Caffrey's is a bustling hotspot for coeds and locals alike. Try some of the free popcorn and Thursday's Bucket 'O Beer to really get into the Caffrey's mood.
Conway's Smokin' Bar & Grill
2127 W. Wells St.
(414) 344-1262
Though a bit farther from central campus, Conway's is a diamond in the rough. The smoky pub is warm and inviting, with an entertainment schedule second to none. Dimly lit and cozy, Conway's has a lounge-like atmosphere perfect for relaxing and enjoying the regular live entertainment featuring acoustic performances on Tuesdays, blues on Wednesdays and college bands on Thursdays. Weekdays offer happy hour study halls from 5 to 7 p.m. with rail drinks and domestic bottles for $2.50. The kitchen is now open, with grilled food awaiting hungry mouths, so stop on by.
Jim Hegarty's Pub
1120 W. Wells St.
(414) 221-1921
Hegarty's is king when it comes to serving the Marquette masses. Whether you want a quiet watering hole or a night of wild debauchery, Hegarty's caters to all. Stop in the early evening for great pub food with the eclectic locals, and munch on a drool-worthy butter burger and fries platter. Stick around for the long, narrow bar to fill with crazy coeds looking to kick back. Heg's is the Times Square of Marquette; if you stay there long enough, you are bound to run into nearly everyone you know.
Murphy's
1613 W. Wells St.
(414) 344-0116
With several dart boards, pool tables, an interactive quiz show and Wednesday night karaoke, this Irish pub is a college student's Disney World. On Wednesdays, Murphy's is home to the Big-Ass Beer (32 oz.) and ultra-popular karaoke night, so be ready to snake your way through the dense crowd. Murph's also features live bands, great drink specials and the undeniable reputation as "the place to be" after MU basketball games. Recently named Playboy's College Bar of the Month, it's no surprise to see the Murphy's line wrapped around Wells on a "good" night. If the weather is nice, enjoy the backyard terrace for a break from the crowd.
Ruby G's
2043 W. Wells St.
(414) 933-2770
Though it actually is more of an espresso cafe, this watering hole on the west end of MU's campus also serves spirits. For a less rowdy, more mature setting to drink in, Ruby G's houses an extensive wine list, as well as traditional brews. A play on words for the rugby influences (the owner is heavily involved in MU Rugby), Ruby G's offers an alternative to the usual Marquette fare.
The Annex
804 N. 16th St.
(414) 288-7769
The Annex is a university-owned hotspot for everything sports. With Al McGuire memorabilia draping the walls, this underground restaurant / bar / bowling alley offers a lot of value for college students counting their pennies. With a giant projection screen TV and each booth hosting its own individual set, the Annex is a sports-enthusiast's dream, especially with the NFL Sunday Ticket available to watch in the fall. The Annex is also the only bar on campus that allows students to pay with their MarquetteCash card, so it's easier to keep the fun flowing. The adjacent bowling alley hosts league nights and great specials. Finish off a hard week of studying with a weekend concert or an acoustic lunch, plus karaoke on Thursdays. And if you want a front row seat to any Marquette sport, get to the Annex early because the warehouse-like center fills to capacity quickly.
