At least seven dead in shooting at Oak Creek Sikh temple

At least seven are presumed dead after a shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin, 7512 S. Howell Ave., in Oak Creek.

According to Greenfield Police Chief Brad Wentlandt in a 1:30 p.m. briefing, multiple SWAT tactical sweeps found four victims inside the temple and three – including a shooter – outside.

The Oak Creek police dispatch received multiple 911 calls around 10:25 a.m. Sunday morning. The initial officer on the scene exchanged gunfire with a shooter outside of the building. The officer is currently being treated at Froedtert Hospital for multiple gunshot wounds.

The shooter is presumed dead, according to Wentlandt. At this time police are unable to confirm if more than one shooter was involved.

Froedtert has reported receiving a total of three male patients for treatment, according to an official statement.

SALDEF, the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund, a national Sikh American civil rights organization, released a brief statement after the shooting, saying, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured, the survivors, their families, and the Oak Creek community."

Stay tuned for developments as more information is released by officials on the scene.
