Forbes has published its annual special report "Best Cities For Singles."  Milwaukee ranks no. 17 (up from no. 32 in 2005), and just behind ATL and five spots better than no. 22 Chicago.

The report talks up Milwaukee and is impressed with its "skyrocketing" up the list:

"Milwaukee, Wisconsin also made its way up the ranks after a disappointing 32nd place finish last year. The city skyrocketed 15 spots up the list to no. 17, largely due to our new and improved culture and nightlife rankings. Now that the city's bars, clubs and museums are measured on a per person scale, the Wisconsin hotspot soars up the list: from 26th to 15th and 28th to 11th in nightlife and culture, respectively."

"Residents say the city's famed festivals, particularly the 11-day Summerfest, are what make the city great for singles. "(Summerfest) is an amazing singles scene," explains Orlando Segura, a national accounts manager at the local Lakefront Brewery. "It's probably the epicenter of singles -- more people hook up and later get married at it than anywhere else."

In its sixth annual report, the magazine looked at 40 large metropolitan areas and judged them on nightlife, culture, job growth, number of other singles, cost of living alone, online dating and coolness.  The data used to create these rankings came from Forbes, the U.S. Census, ACCRA, Mercer Human Resource Consulting, Montreal International, Woods & Poole Economics, AOL CityGuide, Match.com, Kevin Stolarick and Richard Florida of Catalytix, and Gary Gates of the University of California at Los Angeles School of Law.

The top five?  Denver, Boston, Phoenix, San Francisco-Oakland and New York.
