This weekend, the Wyndham Hotel hosts the Milwaukee Tattoo Arts Convention. The convention features artists, vendors and live bands, and the event attracts thousands of body ink enthusiasts from all over the Midwest.
Years ago, tats were reserved for inmates and sailors. Then, in the '90s, they bled into the mainstream with a vengeance. In some circles, tattoos lost popularity in the last few years, but plenty of folks remain hooked on ink.
But what are your thoughts on tattoos? Are they stylish, skanky or passé?
Tattoos are still cool. As long as you have a good artist and a well-thought design, tattoos are still very cool. Milwaukee is filled with talented tattoo artists and the popularity of self-adornment appears to remain at an all-time high.
Tattoos are skanky. Tattoos have been and always will be super skanky looking, no matter what they are or where they're placed. The "tramp stamp" (a lower back tattoo) is the worst, but really, they're all pretty bad.
Tats are tragically passé. Tattoos were cool 10 or 15 years ago, but they're going to "date" people. Two decades from now, no one's going to get tattoos, and all of those washed-up hipsters running around with inked up arms and legs are going to look very '90s.

My tattoo has deep meaning to me and so it will never become passe. I didn't walk in and just pick something "pretty". But even if that was as much thought as Northshore Nancy put into getting hers - each to their own.

To a twenty year old a tattoo is still very stylish. The same tattoo on a fifty or sixty year old body is not the same bit of art. My best friend is a plastic, and he is making some serious coin removing those really cool body arts when the bodies change or when society and business in particular, dictates that the body is no place for viewable art. Please remember it is even more painful and expensive to remove them.

They seem to have become reflective of an almost club-like mentality. The obvious irony is that they originally represented a rebellious, outsider nature.

geesquared...its not like a fashion trend, you can't untight roll them, they're on you forever. and no, they're no "pass," if you want one, get one. It's not a style that is cool or uncool, it's what you wanna do, it's your decision. Yes, i hate the ladybug/dolphin/chinese character you dont know what it means/ or fairy tattoo, because they're not original or dont have meaning. If your mom or dad is a dolphin or fairy, then cool, i apologize. Look ,if you want a tat, get one. They're not "out of style" and its not a fad, it's who you are. Don't listen to "geesquared," he probably has the chinese character tat and still wears fubu, or cross colour. Do what you want.
