Recently some one told me that UWM is considering building a $149 million engineering campus and research park on the Milwaukee County Grounds in Wauwatosa. What? Why?
I hadn't read or heard much on this, so I turned to the Web for some research. Seems many local leaders had gone straight to the daily newspaper to pitch and float this idea. There it was on jsonline, "Engineering school would go on Tosa acreage." I also found takes on the story on other media like the Daily Reporter, thepoliticalenvironment.blogspot.com and a few other entities.
Anyway, why expand the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in Wauwatosa? I know it's all about regional development these days, but honestly what type of college student would want spend his/her college days apart from the buzz and life of a real campus? And, shouldn't UWM take charge and help figure out ways to build life and economy in its own city? Why not build on or around the current campus, in the Park East, Pabst City or Menomonee Valley?
Who knows, maybe I'm being too parochial. Maybe not. Either way, we need more discussion and input about where to put key assets like this. Especially key assets like an engineering school that can truly help increase Milwaukee's brain gain!
Thoughts? Please use the talk backs and start the discussion!

The boys tech lot will become their athletic field I believe. UWM should either expand on the Eastside. Yes on the Eastside, or possibly on the Park East land. Why in the world would they expand out into Tosa is it UW-Wauwatosa?

Build it on the former Boy's Tech High School site. Fill in that horrid blighted vacant lot.

How about along the river where they're developing their new dorms? I'm wondering why UWM is spreading it's arms out like an Octopus, making students travel miles between North Ave, The Kennilworth Building, and the main campus. Now Wauwatosa? Maybe our fat city could use the exercise. I'm under the impression that it would be a mini-campus unto itself, which would reduce that potential commute for most students. It's still causing some head scratching...

NO, you are not being too parochial at all!!! It would seem like a HUGE no-brainer that this development should be built on the Park East Land but this is what happens when the supposed "plan" has to be voted on and constantly discussed. I'm quite frustrated with the common council and our county executive. There inability to work with the Mayor and the constant infighting is doing terrible harm to Milwaukee. I say shame on UWM for not even considering the prime land on the Park East... or perhaps they did and got frustrated trying to play politics with the boys and girls who are running our city. How sad!

Good heavens, by no means should they expand around the current campus. The infrastructure is already overwhelmed. Just consider the fact that there's no convenient freeway access. IMHO the closest to the East Side that UWM should consider expanding is the Brewers Hill/Part East area. McKinley Blvd. is still a pretty well-kept secret for easy freeway access to the lower East Side.
