Albanese's, 701 E. Keefe Ave., was in business for 68 years. |

Yesterday, Albanese's on Keefe quietly served its last plate of pasta. The last Frank Sinatra tune droned from the jukebox. The last basket of free bread perched on a red-and-white-checkered tablecloth.
"We're closed now for good. The economy is rough," said an employee who wished to remain anonymous.
The mom-and-pop Italian restaurant opened in 1941. In June 2007, Michael Vergiels and Jody Kelly took over the Italian eatery and added a lunch menu in a final attempt to attract diners.
Albanese's in Mequon, 12020 N. River Rd., and Albanese's Roadhouse, 2301 Bluemound Rd., will remain open.

I have a feeling it wasn't only the economy that put this place out of business. My family and I have enjoyed Albanese's for many years. A couple of months ago we went a little early on a Friday night (around 4:30 or 5:00) this past August. The smell of cat urine was totally overwhelming and disgusting! When we asked the waitress about it her response was oh yeah they had a problem with their upstairs tenant and his cats. Then she proceeded to walk around and spray an awful air freshener to mask the smell. She also told us once the kitchen started going the smell would go way. We couldn't take it so we just left and never went back. I was totally disgusted and I'm sure i'm not the only one.

It's in Riverwest, just W of Humboldt. Under the photo on top, it says 701 E. Keefe Ave. Been there forever, drive too fast and you miss it. It's sad that it's gone, but if you love their sauce you can still buy at Metro Market and other grocers.

Where on Keefe? I really don't think it matters now, we had been regulars only to witness the standard of good food diminish over the years, it was sad to watch as we really enjoyed Albanese's on Keefe halfway between Humboldt and Holton St. in Riverwest.

This was the place I always recommended to Milwaukee transplants, as a local joint that served great pizza and had unique atmosphere. We ordered take out pizzas several times a month and everything was always perfect. When they lost their ability to accept credit cards a few weeks ago we knew it spelled doom. Very very sorry to see this place close. And I loved all the old pictures in the dining room. Bummer. Where do we order from now?
