Anodyne plans to open roasting facility, cafe in Walker's Point

Anodyne Coffee Roasting Co., currently at 2920 S. Kinnickinnnic Ave., in Bay View, plans to move its roasting facility and open a second cafe in Walker's Point.

Anodyne's loan request will be reviewed on Tuesday. If granted, owner Matthew McClutchy would buy and renovate the building at 224 W. Bruce St. He would also expand the Bay View cafe if the roasting facility moves to Walker's Point.

Even though the Coffee Trader was notorious for slow service and mediocre food, people returned again and again. Many stayed for hours at a time. The restaurant / bar and bakery was also known for a steady turnover of employees, with the exception of Mary Beatty.

June 1 Food Crawl

When I moved to Milwaukee in 1983 I lived in Walker`s Point and spent a lot of time on the corner of 5th and National. And I can assure you a Walker`s Point Food Crawl back then would involve Rudy`s, Acapulco, a ham and egger kitty corner from Tech on National and a couple bodegas, at best. But, as you know, that`s all changed and there`s more than enough gastronomic activity in the heart of old George Walker`s town to fuel a marathon of eating that could last months.

As part of "The Avant Garde Coffee House Project" exhibit currently on view, there`s a glass-topped case with some posters and a record. It`s a pretty nondescript thing, frankly, with a black and white photo and some not especially artful text. But that little record - "Blues, Rags and Hollers," by folk blues trio Koerner, Ray & Glover - made a big bang when it was released in June 1963. And it was made in Milwaukee.
