The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2009. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.
Given that Milwaukee has a thriving Mexican community -- and dozens of great Mexican restaurants to boot -- it takes something special to run away with the readers' choice for the best of the best. Botanas, however, did just that, taking the prize for the second straight year.
Botanas, 816 S. 5th St., is known for doing the traditional Mexican dishes better than its Latin Quarter contemporaries near National Avenue, but its seafood selections are what hoist it to the top of the list.
The addition of the open-air patio contributes to the fun and relaxing atmosphere, especially on a warm evening. It's an extremely family-friendly and accommodating restaurant, too, the kind of place you can bring little kids to taste authentic Mexican cuisine.

are you kidding me!? i would put riviera maya the best on that list. but if you haven't been to coa, you need to go!! it is the best, most authentic mexican food i've had in milwaukee. it's right in bayshore [replacing cameron's steakhouse]. it is amazing!

Botanas is only Americanized Mexican food coming from a true Latina who knows her Latin food. They also are very rude and not accommodating to large groups of people. If you want GOOD food- Cielito was good, but is closing. I, PERSONALLY, enjoy La Salsa, Tres Hermanos, and El Rey.

Cielito Lindo is the best; the more popular area choices are not in the same league. Arteaga's on S. 16th is also a great option.

Ha, ha , funny Dave " Did LaFuente get 15 % of their votes added on as a gratuity without telling anyone ? " I've always been forced to go to La Fuente for various group outings and never had a good meal, Chi' Chi's like at best. They don't even have a decent hot sauce in the house!!! Botanas is great, Cielito Lindo is my fave, and Riviera Maya is okay, but overpriced.
