The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2008. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.

October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, special features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food. Bon appetit!

Balzac, 1716 N. Arlington Pl., is an experience. The knowledgeable staff seems unfailingly happy to see you, and is helpful in offering suggestions for wine or menu items. And nearly one in five OnMilwaukee.com readers says Balzac has the city's best wine list.

That's thanks to its vast, five-page wine list offering everything from a $6 glass of Caves de Pomerol Picpoul de Pinet to a $400 bottle of Australian Henschke "Hill of Grace."

The wines are served in stemless Riedel crystal, an indication that someone in the joint knows how to treat wine, and the menu offers low-priced "tastes" in case you can't make up your mind between the Hungarian Oremus Tokaji Furmint and French Mas Neuf.

The bar also offers 23 different bottled beers, eight draughts and 13 different martinis.

OnMilwaukee.com editor's choice: Dream Dance

Runners-up:
2. Bacchus
3. Dream Dance
4. Eddie Martini's
5. Sanford
6. Water Buffalo
7. Carnevor
8. Mo's -- A Place for Steaks
9. La Merenda
10. Osteria del Mondo
11. Crazy Water
tie. Milwaukee Chop House
13. Tess
14. Riversite
15. River Lane Inn

Last time I went to Balzac, I was impressed at their extensive wine list but I definitely think Pizza Man beats them by a landslide. Another good wine list with pages of choices is at Bartalotta's in Tosa.

I have to mention Nessun Dorma - it may not win the best wine list, but for a laid-back neighborhood bar atmosphere, it has a good size inexpensive wine list (including dessert wines).

THE VOTERS ARE WRONG!!!!! Dream Dance has one of the largest, if not the largest, wine list in the STATE. Moreover, it is at retail pricing. Balzac does have a solid list but red wine is always served warm--not room temperature--warm. That's not the sign of a place serious about wine

While their wine list may be large, the two times I have been to Balzac, they were out of the wine I had requested. I also think Balzac is very overpriced. Plus, I would never give a place kudos for stemless glasses! It merely forces the wine drinker to be overly conscious of where they are holding their glass so as not to warm up the $12 glass of wine with their hand. Its a worthwhile place to visit, but certainly NOT the best in our great city!

You gotta be kidding!?!?! Balazc over Dream Dance and Bacchus. And I also agree that not including Pizza Man at all kinda makes the list laughable
