For the seventh straight year, October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com, presented by the restaurants of Potawatomi. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, delectable features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food, as well as the winners of our "Best of Dining 2013."
It was certainly a close scare, but for the sixth year in a row, OnMilwaukee.com readers selected Cafe Lulu as the home of the city's finest sandwiches.
A mere two votes separated the much-loved Bay View bar and cafe, 2261 and 2265 S. Howell Ave., from its latest challenger, long-time Milwaukee mainstay Jake's Deli. However, Cafe Lulu's combination of sandwiches, pitas, melts and baguettes – plus their house-made potato chips and Asian slaw – proved yet again that they're too tasty to top.
Glorioso's was also in contention to knock off the now six-time champion, but it finished 15 votes short and wound up in very respectable (and mighty delicious) third place. Comet Cafe and Melthouse Bistro wrapped up the rest of the top five.
