The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2008. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.
October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, special features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food. Bon appetit!
Condominiums or steakhouses?
There was a time not too long ago when it was unclear which structures were multiplying faster Downtown. The economy may have taken a downturn recently, but Milwaukeeans love their steak.
And, they love the Five O'Clock Steakhouse.
A perennial favorite among OnMilwaukee.com readers, the restaurant formerly known as Coerper's Five O'Clock Club continued its reign by winning the 2008 award by a comfortable margin over second-place Carnevor and Wauwatosa favorite Eddie Martini's.
The venerable 5 O'Clock, located at 2416 W. State St., has served huge hunks of perfectly seared, lightly crusted and flavorful meat for more than four decades. Neither the ambience nor the décor -- straight out of the '60s -- has changed much.
Customer loyalty hasn't wavered, either.
The Five O'Clock keeps people coming back because the New York Strip and filet mignon are comparable to the best steakhouses in the country. In 2007, Saveur magazine called the restaurant one of its five favorite steakhouses in the country.
Our readers agree.

I have to say that Mason Street Grill was one of the worst experiences I have ever had. Immediately, our server pegged us as people unworthy to dine in his premier establishment. Service was terrible to say the least. Then the steak, horrible! I ordered a New York Strip, medium. Was cooked medium-well. The outside of the steak was encrusted with some disgusting rub that I didn't order and it was so greasy I think they grilled it in a vat of bacon fat. It truly was the most disgusting forty dollar steak I have ever eaten.

I'm also surprised there is no mention of the Jackson Grill. I missed voting, but was it even on the ballot?

CollegeDave: I agree. Jackson Grill is definitely my No. 1 place in town!

LOVE the steak - best in town...hate that they are now doing the ala carte thing for potatoes, veggies, etc. $7 for a few stalks of asparagus...$4 something for a baked potato...admittedly, one of the biggest in town. I'd rather pay more for the steak and be able to still say that they haven't fallen into the ala carte trap.

I can't agree on 5 O'Clock. I had a horrible exerience there last New years Eve. Burned my wife's medium steak (badly, not just "blackened") and the waitress said, "That's the way do it. It's fine". My steak, which was medium well, was fine. Perhaps they are better on less busy nights. I have to give Carnevor props on presentation and quality, although they are a bit to the high side.
