It's debatable how much English Frank speaks beyond "pepperoni" and "cannoli," but the former butcher is more shrewd than you might think. |

The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2009. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.
Here at OnMilwaukee.com, we're delighted to see all sorts of new vendors pop up on the streets of Milwaukee. From pizza to pitas, crepes to tacos, the hungry lunchtime (and bar time) crowd has more options than ever.
But the readers of OnMilwaukee.com narrowly picked an old favorite, Frank "Pepperoni Cannoli" Pecoraro, the cooler-toting senior who's been serving hungry drunks on the East Side and Downtown for years.
It's debatable how much English Frank speaks beyond "pepperoni" and "cannoli," but the former butcher is more shrewd than you might think. He's a lovable, sometimes surly and always entertaining Milwaukee fixture, and one of the fathers of street food as we know it today.
OnMilwaukee.com editors' choice: Streetza
Runners-up:
2. Real Dogs
3. Satellite Crepes
4. Streetza
5. Pita Brothers
6. Taqueria Arandas
7. American Euros
8. Hot dog cart on Water Street

Are you kidding me? Cannoli Frank is a dumpster diver. Not once, but twice this summer I saw him digging through garbage's. No way on Earth would I want to eat food from someone I saw dumpster diving. Now granted the other few times I've ran into him, he was polite and I even have bought him a beer on occasion... but best street food... um no!

This guy won "Best Street Food?!" Okay, these best ofs are getting out of hand. Him winning is just plain silly.

I used to work at Judges and remember Crazy Ray. I think the last gov race was supposed to be his. I wonder where he is as well.

Speaking of crazy Milwaukee bar regulars, what happened to Crazy Ray of UWM? Last time I saw him was at Judges convincing patrons that he was running for governer.

This guy is still around?! He can be quite annoying, but still a late-night Milwaukee icon...
