We've got some tasty news on the local dining front.
After months of working hard to rehab the former Annona Bistro space at 2643 S. Kinnickinic Ave., restaurateur Scott Johnson (Fuel Café, Comet Café, Balzac, Palomino, Hi Hat Garage) says he and his business partners -- Leslie Montemurro, and Adam and Val Lucks of Comet -- are almost ready to unveil the goods.
Honeypie, as the new eatery is called, will open in the second week of May, Johnson says.
He calls Honeypie very "Comet-esque," with a similar breakfast, lunch and dinner menu that focuses on Midwestern comfort food and utilizes local meats, eggs and vegetables. He also noted a few additions not seen at Comet, namely Cornish style pasties and Montemurro's family recipe for kielbasa soup.
And of course, homemade pie takes a special spotlight here, as the name suggests.

Went Tuesday for lunch with a friend and we waited 50 minutes for lunch before finally walking out. We inquired twice about the status of our lunch and told it was "on the way". Finally the watress informed us that there was a "problem" in the kithen and our food would be out shortly. We told here to cancel the order because we were tired of waiting, especially after seeing customers that came in after us, order, eat and leave!! Cross this one off the list....

We went to Honeypie Friday night and if we'd been wearing socks they would have been blown away. First off, the bartender - Andy - blew us away with his knowledge of their beer selection. He made food recommendations and strongly urged us to put our dessert order in right when we sat down because they go fast. The pork fries...well we all agreed they were so good we might just order that for dinner next time. The pulled pork was plentiful, the sauce was sweet and sassy, and the fries were obviously fresh cut and fried when our order went in. They thought outside the iceberg box and the small side salad had an impressive variety of greens AND the ranch dressing was made from scratch. We had the walleye special and I think it brought tears to my husbands eyes it was so wonderful. We did indeed order ahead for our dessert. Both the banana cream and blueberry-peach pies were easily the best pies we've ever had and all made from scratch by some blue-ribbon winning honeys in the kitchen. Do I dare say the crust was better that my sweet grandmothers? Gasp! And no stinking whipped plastic - it was all real whipped cream. We left with a Honeypie tshirt (thanks Andy!) and have been planning our next visit. It might just be too hot to cook tonight!

Ate there on a Sunday morning for brunch had lunch during the week once before. Brunch was a huge disappointment. Service was slow and at least two of the wait staff were very unprofesional frazled and visabliy frustated. Brunch item corn beef hash was skimpy and looked and tasted unappealing. Big disappointment coming from experinced restarantuers

We only had drinks, but the food that walked past us on the way to the tables looked fantastic. THANK YOU for NOT being like Centraal/Hollander etc and having the same menu at all of your establishments (drives me nuts). I love the fact I can go to all of your restaurants and enjoy a different menu, never gets boring!

Great redesigned space. I went there for the lunch for the first time today. I love the push for everything made in house. Even the pickles were great. A bit hard to find the phone number but it is 489-7437...another great addition in the best place to live, Bay View.
