October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, special features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food. Bon appetit!
Sometimes it's obvious which restaurants are appropriate for kids and which ones are not. Obviously, youngsters are welcome at most chain restaurants like TGIFriday's or The Chancery, but potentially less welcome at a place that's fancier.
Some Milwaukee restaurants, however, are questionable as to whether or not kids are welcome. Recently, I considered bringing my kids to a few restaurants that are more "grown up" eateries, but wondered if we would get looks of disgust.
I recognize it depends on the age of the kids, the way they behave and how busy the restaurant is, but in general, do you find any or all of these restaurants to be appropriate for children?
1. Emperor of China, 1010 E. Brady St.
2. Roots, 1818 N. Hubbard St.
3. Comet Cafe, 1947 N. Farwell Ave.
4. Cempazuchi, 1205 E. Brady St.
5. Marchese's Olive Pit, 1100 S. 1st St.

slugworth, Good "Stripes" reference. The problem I have been seeing is that most parents are not being courteous out there. It's bad enough that you'll see infants at events that simply are not appropriate for them but then the problem will be compounded by the parents standing by and allowing their kid to act however they want. This is all not to say that I think infants and small children should always be left at home if an adult is present. You listed a few examples of places where one would expect to run into kids and are perfectly good venues for them. I'm just not sure that a concert event, restaurant or sporting vent where people are paying good money to go is the right place to bring them.

Oh lighten up, Francis. My wife and I sacrifice plenty of fun for the sake of our children. But we don't sacrifice all of our fun---and why should we? Because the mere presence of children bums *you* out? Get over yourself. Children crying next to you is one thing, and a courteous parent would excuse themselves in that situation. My (very young) children like music. We like to nurture those interests. We take them to outdoor shows (mid day and early evening of course, usually free "concert in the park" type shows). As long as my children aren't loud or running around, the problem is with you and not them. I'm not going to lock the kids up because the mere *idea* of children is a buzz kill for you.

We took kids to Cempazuchis and it was fine. They gave us a Frida Kahlo coloring sheet for the girls--but they didn't like the food. But usually we opt to bring them to more traditional Mexican food places. Cempazuchis tends to be a little "fancy" for their palates. Comet--we usually get take out and it is a treat. For $8 a shot, I can make grilled cheese and tomato soup and mac a cheese and home.

Stacie, Taking an infant to a baseball game is never a good idea especially if they are going to be next to me crying a good chunk of the time. I'm pretty sure the baby is not getting any enjoyment of being around a crowd that big. As someone else said, times have changed. I think the change has been that the generation I am a part of and parenting with has no intention of sacrificing any of their desires and will bring their infants and toddlers to restuarants or events that are zero fun for them because the parent doesn't want to miss out. Maybe all the babies who were at Lollapalooza were big Radiohead fans and maybe the babies at a Brewers game know the ins and outs of the game, but I doubt it. I love my kids and we do all sorts of stuff with them but we have a clear understanding of what is kid time and what is adult time

Stacie, Infants going to a baseball game is a bad idea. It becomes an even worse idea when that baby is crying the whole time. Babies tend to do that and I'm pretty sure they have zero interest in baseball. I'm not crazy about bringing toddlers either unless they are actually interested in the game. As someone else said, times have changed. I think the change has been that parents do not want to sacrifice any of their fun even if it means bringing their infants and toddlers to places that really are not appropriate. We take our kids all sorts of places but have somehow managed to refrain from bringing them to events and restuarants that are more adult orientated.
