What happens when two hard-working women spiff up a former George Webb's and offer some of the most creative sandwiches in the city? The answer is the soon-to-be-famous Café Lulu in Bay View.
Owned and operated by Sarah Jonas and Cameryne Roberts, these two women have spiced up the old luncheonette with a splash of color, fresh plants and contemporary art that give the place an East Side feel.
Homemade soup, fresh salads and hot sandwiches are the strength here. Grilled tuna on a bed of greens with a calypso citrus sauce and fresh mango is a good choice. The sandwich selection changes weekly in quest of determining the café's best. We sampled the Cubano, a Cuban style sandwich that is filled with roasted pork loin, capicolla, swiss cheese, chive mayo and pickles and is grilled between two cast iron pans. Ricky Ricardo is smiling! The Morrocan chicken breast is marinated in a roasted red pepper marinade, grilled and served with a tangy Boursin cheese laced with fresh herbs. The Milano is an Italian style panini loaded with fresh mozzarella, grilled peppers, eggplant and portobella mushrooms all sandwiched inside thick Tuscan breads.
Watch Café Lulu to become one hot little spot.
Bottled beer available.
Inexpensive.
