The Melting Pot won't open in the Third Ward.

Third Ward Melting Pot plans on hold

In February, we reported that the Milwaukee area's second Melting Pot would open "soon" in the Historic Third Ward neighborhood at 341 N. Milwaukee St., the former Milwaukee Antiques Center.

Today, I've learned that local franchise owner of the upscale eatery offering a variety of cheese, chocolate and hot oil- / broth-based fondues has put its expansion plans on hold.

"The location we were interested in is not proceeding as planned. Our project has been delayed," Rudy Soik told me.

Ruby and Matthew Soik still own and operate The Melting Pot in Brookfield at 19850 N. Bluemound Rd. It opened in 2004.

Melting Pot is like Benihana and Sabor. Cool the first time you go, but expensive and not quite worth a 2nd try.

The Brookfield location has survived mostly due to a lack of quality restaurants within a couple miles. As if the Melting Pot would stand a chance in a neighborhood that is already overflowing with great restaurants. Sure, it would be packed for two months after opening due to the gimmick factor. But once word spread (and you know it spreads fast downtown), the tables would be half filled 6 months later. People would be parking in front and walking down the street to something better.

The Melting Pot is one of those one time experience places. The food isn't great and the prices are way too high, but it is fun to say you have done it once. And then never do it again. Let hope we can get a local restaurant in there serving something interesting.

Sorry to hear. Perhaps we can full this space with an upscale burger joint, a pizza place, steakhouse, or a hair salon- you know, something Milwaukee is lacking. I know, SLIDERS!

I've dined at the Brookfield location too and vowed not to go that far out of my way for such an overpriced dinner experience. I always thought it is a nice concept as an after dinner place to grab a drink with a little chocolate fondue... I could see a Downtown location doing well with this. I agree, this isn't a make or break thing for the area, but I hope the franchisee works through their issues and at least opens in 2010.
