Burger fans on the East Side have reason to celebrate today.
Sobelman's Pub and Grill, which has been serving up delicious burgers for the past decade at 1900 W. St. Paul Ave., is opening a new location in the building that formerly housed Patty Burger.
The story was first reported by the Journal Sentinel.
Sobelman's Tallgrass Grill, 1952 N. Farwell Ave., is slated to open June 1 and will feature burgers made with meat supplied by Tallgrass Beef Co., which was founded by TV journalist Bill Kurtis and feeds its cows grass rather than corn, which is believed to make more flavorful as well as lower in fat.
"It's a special product," owner Dave Sobelman said. "It's a great tasting burger that is better for you."
Sobelman laughed when asked if the new location would serve the bar's signature Bloody Mary.
"I knew that was going to come up," he said. "We don't have a liquor license now. We were going to listen to what the customers say and if there is enough of a demand, we'd look into getting one.
"We hadn't planned on serving anything but burgers, but we are almost as popular for the Bloody Marys as we aer the burgers.
"We'll just play it by ear."
Patty Burger which is based in Chicago, opened the business at Farwell Ave. and Irving Place a little more than two years ago but closed due to sluggish sales blamed on the economy.

Crap...maybe I won't be moving off Prospect and Irving this summer! I think the skeptics really need to chill out. Yes...they probably will have to change up their business style to suit the location but there is no denying the awsomeness of that burger an bun! I'm thinking maybe a small sit down place with a small patio area outside in the summer. If they are open late for take out and delivery, they will make a killing on the bar crowd (not the best location for after bar take out but their brand name and a nice delivery service should make up for this).

Hopefully they dont try to compete with the Comet. If they stick to burgers and such (which Comet does not have a variety of) I think they could do fine. Seems like way too small of a space for a liquor license tho.

Count me as skeptical as to the success of Sobelman's at this location. Don't get me wrong, I wish them the VERY best. I love Sobelman's. But part of its charm is its building (i.e., the old Schlitz tide-house), as well as it's sort of hidden, off-the-beaten path feel. The Patty's Burger building is small and sort of fast-foodish in ambiance. Yes, the Sobelman's burgers are good (and as someone else pointed out, so are the Bloody Marys -- a liquor license is a must). But so is the Comet's Big Luck Burger, not to mention its beer selection. So I wish them the very best, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Sobelman's success doesn't transfer over to the Farwell Avenue location (parking problems, one-way streets, small building -- yikes!).
