Local restaurant and nightlife entrepreneur, Thomas Wackman and his Wackman Group have secured one of the final pieces of the Milwaukee Street entertainment puzzle, the former Heinemann's Restaurant space at 730 N. Milwaukee St. An entity called T and P Development, LLC owns the building and the transaction took place with EAD Real Estate, LLC.

The space, sadly, has sat vacant since 1993 as the rest of Milwaukee Street, between Wisconsin Avenue and Mason Street, has become one of Downtown's premier dining and nightlife destinations.

Byron Heinemann started Heinemann's in 1923 as a candy shop at 730 N. Milwaukee St. The company shifted its focus in the 1950s to baked goods and restaurants and closed its once-buzzing Milwaukee Street restaurant in 1993.

Wackman wouldn't say what his plans are for the space (a pizza by the slice place would be great. -ed.), but its sure to be a complement to his ownership and investments in Umami Moto, Carnevor, Apartment 720 and Charro (coming soon to the former Tangerine space).

Wackman owns several of these entities with Michael H. Polaski and fellow Milwaukee Street pioneer Omar Shaikh.

How about a creperie, like La Creperie in Chicago?

Good luck putting Zarletti's out ouf business. That place just continues to get better every time I go. LOVE IT! Now with this "final" piece in place, it's time to extend the redevelopment down Milwaukee street. Star Bar looks lost next to all those empty, run down buildings. Milwaukee street has the potential to be a nice street and a great connecter to the Third Ward.

Let me guess, an Italian restaurant to put Zarlettis out of business? Unami Moto = Saki Tumi. Charro = Cubanitos. Anyone see a pattern? It won't be original.

Finally! I am sick and tired of these Milwaukee property owners (usually rich white non-milwaukeeans) that sit on these vacant and blighted properties. Their properties are eyesores to the community, and these property owners don't care at all about the City and it's residents, only about money. Can't the City actively fine or assess a fee to these properties so that the owner is persuaded to sell to someone who will actually care for and utilize the property. And don't get me started on the evil slumlords....
