The Shorewood Public Art Committee announced that it's begun planning a new public art project: an "artistic sensory experience" called "The Ghost Train."

Designed by Marty Peck of Creative Lighting Design & Engineering, a Germantown-based firm  specializing in the expressive use of light in architecture, "The Ghost Train" will recreate the image of the historic "Twin Cities 400" train – touted at the time as the world's fastest passenger train – that crossed the Oak Leaf Trail Bridge at Capitol Drive from 1935 until 1963. Using innovative lighting and sound design, "The Ghost Train" will cross the bridge twice each night, with subtler artistic illumination decorating the bridge at other times.

"This will be a first-of-its-kind experience that blends art, history and technology, and we believe it will draw interest not only in Shorewood but throughout Wisconsin and beyond," said Guy Johnson, village president, in a release.

Fundraising and the process of securing village approval are currently underway for the project, with a community discussion session scheduled for Thursday, March 24 from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m. If granted approval, the current tentative launch for "The Ghost Train" is October 2016 – just in time for Shorewood's 100th anniversary celebration next year.
