The Milwaukee Theatre is a 4,100-seat assembly, concert and theatrical venue in Downtown Milwaukee.

Built in 1909 as the Milwaukee Auditorium, the building was extensively renovated from 2001-2003.

Express Yourself Milwaukee: Illuminate 2016

For all of the young people involved, the Express Yourself Milwaukee show reflects of a year of artistic exploration and self-discovery. Every aspect of the show — the set, the music, the dancing, the videos, the spoken words — is the result of hundreds of individual contributions from youth working in the studio, in the community, and in treatment facilities.

ILLUMINATE

ILLUMINATE is a one-of-kind performance celebrating the culmination of work done by young people and professional artists working in collaboration through Express Yourself Milwaukee’s year-long multi-disciplinary arts exploration. The performance showcases dance, music, spoken word and visual arts for a powerful explosion of creativity. Express Yourself Milwaukee is a local non-profit working with low-income youth in Milwaukee’s central city. Founded in 2003, Express Yourself Milwaukee immerses young people in the arts, providing them a powerful tool for self-expression, uncover inner strength and deepen connection with others. They serve young people between the ages of 7 and 21, 95 percent of whom are low-income, and 80 percent are known to delinquency and court services. Since 2003, over 5,000 young people have participated in their programs. Using music, dance, theater and visual arts, Express Yourself Milwaukee brings much-needed joy to Milwaukee youth whose lives are affected by adversity and challenge. The creative approach that Express Yourself Milwaukee takes through its arts-based activities teaches young people valuable long-term skills that can change their lives in positive and impactful ways. In a safe and supportive environment, Express Yourself youth experience vital growth, setting them on a path toward becoming active contributors to their community.
