My old JVC is about to die. Help me find a new one. |

We own one television. I know this is odd as most households seem to have tubes in three or four different rooms. But, we play it simple and old school. The 26-inch TV of which I speak is more than 20 years old. It's also dying a slow death.
The reds are fading and the sound getting murky. My sports viewing is rough these days and even my DVRed favorites are starting to be a pain to watch. Yes, it's time for a new TV.
But, here's the thing. There's a reason I haven't upgraded. Too many frickin' choices. Too many brands, sizes, types, etc. It's crazy out there in the "buy a new TV world." And while I love the HD flat screen as much as the other guy, investing in a new multi hundred-dollar model just hasn't been a priority. Ironically two of my best friends also are in similar situations with aging, yet still functional tubes. We're lame, I know.
Anyway, I sense a complete burn out of this old JVC in the very near future. So, "buy a new TV stat-priority status" will be here soon. And this is where you come in.
Dear OnMilwaukee.com readers, help me. Tell me what to buy. Where to buy it. How much to pay and what I need to know. Guide me, help me and be my "it's time to buy a new TV" beacon.
You know what to do. Fire away with the Talkbacks. Thanks.

I think the following should be considered with what you're looking to buy: 1. LCD or Plasma - Plasma isn't good in bright conditions. LCD is since it's a backlit screen. Plasma does look better if you're big on watching a lot of movies (in the dark). I read the environmental groups are making noise over in Europe because the plasma screens are 30% less energy efficient...and the governments are listening. LCD may become the only game in town over there. 2. Size - If you get anything bigger than 50 inches, get the 1080p resolution. If you get anything smaller stick with the 720p, you won't really notice the difference that much except that you're paying more for 1080. 3. Personal preference - Bottom line is it's always up to you. It's best to go to a store so you can check it for yourself. Look at the screen at different angles (you'll see there are different view perspectives on some TV's). Keep in mind how the lighting in your rec room/living room/whatever room is lit and how the store is lit. I made a list what brands/models I liked then researched the internet for reviews on them, narrowing it down to one specific TV. Consumer Reports does not recommend extended warranties on anything except these TV's since the technology is still fairly new. I agree with the post regarding monster cables. Waste of money.

You will not regret DLP. That is old news and the newer DLPs have no such problem. At any rate, you have to get what is right for you; and consider if your media room has sun glare or not .

Samsung 40 inch LCD 1080 p. I have 4. Never a problem and crystal clear HD picture. They cost about $900.00. Can get it at the store you like best.

Jeff, can you share what you found in your research? I am going to replace my 1992 Mitsubishi with a flat screen and was wondering the same thing.
