Borders Group, Inc. filed for Chapter 11 protection Wednesday and said it's closing nearly 30 percent of its locations. Its prime location at 101 W. Wisconsin Ave. in Downtown Milwaukee is on the list.
Most other stores in Wisconsin -- Madison, Fox Point and Greendale -- will also close. There will be two remaining Borders in Wisconsin, on the East Side of Madison and in Eau Claire. Also remaining open will be Walden Books, a subsidiary of Borders, in Fond du Lac, Janesville and Sheboygan.
Borders opened in Downtown Milwaukee in 2002 in the former Marshall Field’s building that now also houses American Society for Quality, Visit Milwaukee, other office tenants and Residence Inn Milwaukee Downtown.
