My taqueria wish endures, but El Rey is leaving Public Market. |

In November 2008, I was informed by Milwaukee Public Market officials that Kehr's Candies and El Rey would switch places, allowing the local Mexican grocer to set up a taqueria at the far west of the market. I wrote that it was a wish come true.
Since then, plans have stalled and changed. Today, I've learned that El Rey is vacating its spot at the Milwaukee Public Market at month's end, but is working with market staff to finalize a deal that would replace this satellite El Rey location with another local Mexican foods/restaurant vendor that would offer prepared items in "a taqueria-style."
El Rey's decision to leave the market is based on its need to focus on its core grocery business.

LLM, reread my post. I said there was never anyone at the Mexican joint. And the only places ever busy are the 2 I mentioned - and occassionally the Cheese Shop. The wine guy is always sitting on his laptop, and the tables are full of people - many of whom bring in their own lunches. No wonder places don't make money.

It's usually hard to find a seat between 11-2 at the Market. The place is pretty busy and continuing to find its groove with new vendors and ideas.

I bet this decision was based more on the fact that there was never anyone there. Too bad, but the only places that ever seem busy at lunch are Rupena's and Aladdin.
