Despite the on-going excitement surrounding Milwaukee's first ever Fashion Week (and our abundant coverage of the anticipated high-profile participants), founder and organizer Hillary Fry has canceled the event.

The announcement came today, just 24 hours before the three-day fashion function was scheduled to begin. From what we can tell, there was a lack of funding, but, at this point, all we know is what she's told us:

"The organizers of Milwaukee Fashion Week are saddened to report that the event, which was scheduled for Oct. 3 through 6, has been canceled in full. This decision is due to unfulfilled financial commitments. Without these necessary funds, we will be unable to cover the high cost of bringing an event of this magnitude to Milwaukee.

"We were encouraged by the strong enthusiasm the community showed for Milwaukee Fashion Week and are therefore disappointed the event will not move forward as planned. A decision has not yet been reached regarding rescheduling the event for a future date. Those who purchased tickets online for Milwaukee Fashion Week will receive a full refund."

Boutique B'Lou, inside the Pfister Hotel, is picking up some of the slack by hosting some of the designers participate in a three day weekend mini expo. This free event will have food and beverage as well as modeling by Ford.

Many people in the fashion community, designers and boutique owners are upset about the cancellation. Canceled one day before the event??? If it was a financial issue it should have been addressed earlier. If it was a contractual issue, the contract should have been secured before the people started purchasing tickets and before designers payed their $600.00 registration fee. Designers have been planning for this event the past two months, purchasing additional items, in some cases spending thousands of dollars! This is embarrassing. This requires justice not mercy.

This was actually pretty popular with those that work int he industry and she did a huge amount of work and put her heart and soul into this event. What happened is horrible, and I honestly hope she can get through everything and know her friends are here to support her.

These events seemed something haphazardly put together, but they had some big names. Milwaukee does have a strong fashion scene and when you blend it with Chicago, the area is a destination for designer and boutiques. Hats off for trying, but probably best to leverage the existing fashion events and support them while shopping the city's fashion district in the Third Ward.

In related news, I heard they canceled "Milwaukee Healthy Eating Week," too. Apparently due to lack of interest.
